This is an important subject. Too many guitar players fall into ruts or bad habits when they get all-too familiar with licks that they play almost with no thought involved. This is what starts to happen with the mundane and plain old “turnaround” licks so many are guilty of overplaying.

The harmonic “raking” technique is rarely shown, and it relates most to the old-time jazz styles of such greats as Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, Les Paul, and many others. I have adapted it to all types of styles, and once you know it you’ll find it a handy little technique that can be “thrown in” to many playing situations.

When one starts to utilize the various pentatonic scales, it becomes quite apparent that after awhile certain “outside” or “passing” notes become necessary to stretch these scales and their potential. What happens is there is a whole new array of licks and phrases that are born out of these notes being added, and the possibilities are endless.
