Open G and C Chord Country Hammer-Ons

This style is equally suited to electric as well as acoustic playing, but clearly owes its origins to the acoustic players of early country music. We will work strongly on the right-hand patterns that help to establish the foundation needed to execute these licks properly, and it’s a great workout in “jumping” strings in a flatpick style.

The high strings in this lesson will essentially be used as “drone” notes that will enable us to use the bass strings for the more melodic approach of the country hammer-ons and pull-offs. It’s a great style, and surely one that you’ll recognize and enjoy!

I suppose the final product of this lesson is the true coordination of left- and right-hand techniques from a rhythmic standpoint, so this will be emphasized strongly throughout the lesson. From bluegrass to rock, these are timeless licks that will have you expanding your playing in no time!—Arlen Roth
